Hello, This is an introduction of myself, to I guess, the world. I am a flower farmer in the Tacoma/Puyallup area and officially started my business last year. I have been growing all sorts of things most of my life. Much of this interest for flowers and horticulture in general started out on a 100 acre farm that my parents own in Texas. As a child I loved both being outdoors and learning about nature. I believe that my parent's farm became an outdoor classroom that taught me many lessons through both hands on learning and observation. I especially loved all the beautiful wildflowers that grew along the highways, pastures, and countryside areas. I believe this is where my true love and interest for flowers was sparked.
After leaving my parent's farm I had initially set out to get a degree in either horticulture or landscaping. I ended up getting neither, but a degree in English.. (maybe that will help me out here a bit in blogging).. Upon graduating from Hardin Simmons University I decided to spread my wings and moved to the Seattle Washington area. This is where I met and married my husband and began my family. It was during this season that the seeds for a business began to take root.
We married and settled in a family owned home in downtown Auburn for 12 years. This is where and I learned a lot more about gardening, planting, and planning designs around smaller spaces. It was during these 12 years that the idea of a flower business was born. Our space was limited where we lived and it wasn't until 2014 that we bought our property with 1/2 acre in Tacoma, Washington. It was here that I started to dig in (literally) and shape our entire back yard into what now is my cutting garden area. This /4 acre maze of cutting beds took shape over a 2 year period. Like most start-ups, my first year had a lot of ups and downs with many learning opportunities along the way. Again, with a smaller scale space the layout is fairly detailed and intensive. I am able to achieve this by ensuring I have really healthy, rich soil, which makes for loads of happy flowers.
Besides raising flower babies, I am also raising and nurturing 5 of my own babies, all girls, ranging in ages from 2 and 1/2 to 15 years old. They are truly the heartbeat and motivation behind my flower growing endeavors. I am first and foremost a wife and Mother, with flower farmer following close behind.
I'd like to share with you the journey I'm currently on in the form of being a small business owner, juggling it all as a wife and Mom, and also sharing my love of growing flowers and gardening.
I ask you to join me as learn and grow this little urban flower farm one bud at a time.
